Though Egypt's brewing history goes back at least 5,000 years, beer making was no doubt going on elsewhere among African tribes throughout the continent. Today, all but the fundamentalist Muslim countries have their own breweries. Most produce a pilsner style, though there are a few ales in South Africa and stouts in Nigeria.
Nigeria is the biggest brewing country in Africa, with more than fifty breweries. Most of them were built in the last twenty years. South Africa and Zaire are also brewing nations of significance. South Africa is enjoying a beer renaissance, with a growing number of microbreweries.
